My Students
The Lorax speaks for the trees but I speak for my students. Please help them learn about the environment.
Our school is close to 2 military bases and many of my children are military dependents.
Our school is an older, urban school that does not have many resources other than textbooks. I have been teaching for less than 7 years and I need more materials for my students. My 25 second graders are great students but they suffer from a serious handicap. Nine of my students often cannot remember the names of the letters. Seven students are over a 1.5 years below level. I have six English Language Learner students. Eleven of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. They all want to learn and they work very hard.
My Project
My students need to learn more about the earth and how to care for it. I want to create a unit based upon the Lorax. First, I plan to read the Lorax by Dr. Seuss to them. Then I plan to have my students read the book The Lorax and How to Help the Earth.
They will brainstorm what they can do for the earth. We will talk about recycling and reducing waste. Then we will go outside with the cameras and take pictures of the trees and the earth in our playground and our neighborhood. We will look critically at what is happening when people throw trash in our creek and on our playground. When we come back inside, we will use the pictures to make posters on how to help our earth. The posters will be hung around school and will also be sent to our school business partners.
Finally we will take a look at the movie the Lorax and have an Earth Day celebration for our friends and family.
My students need your help because my school has no money for luxuries like new books and materials for our classroom.
These books will be used to teach reading skills as well as an awareness of the environment and what it means to be a steward of the earth . Please help bring Earth Day into the lives of my students. Your donation will help my students and their Lorax Club.
