Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The demand for science, math, technology, and engineering inclined minds are on the rise. While I will ensure that each of my students gets a great math education, I also want every sixth grader at my school to build awareness about their daily paper use and the resulting impact on the environment.
My school is a title 1 school with 100% eligibility, meaning that ALL students fall below the minimum income level.
My kids face many obstacles every day, including poverty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. These obstacles could easily distract any child from succeeding. My students, however, are VERY committed to success! In spite of these obstacles, my 6th grade class has made a commitment as a class to not only graduate from high school, but to also graduate from college! The Disney Challenge has presented us with an opportunity to explore the environmental impact of their journey to college.
We are attempting to implement a digital classroom. By completing our work on the computer rather than regularly making copies, we can greatly diminish our use of paper. I am requesting equipment such as flip cameras,
My Project
As a class, we will keep track of the amount of paper that we would have used each day if we chose to do our work on paper rather than on the computer. Weekly, we will record how many pieces of paper we have saved as a class. We will also calculate how many trees we have saved by not using so much paper.
This project is truly interdisciplinary. It involves math in our calculation of how much money was saved during this project and in calculating projections about how much we could save if we continue for a certain number of years. It involves science in analyzing they numbers of trees saved and the resulting impact on the environment. It involves Social Studies/ethics in our discussion about whose responsibility it is to ensure the health of the world for ourselves and future generations.
We are very excited to participate in the Disney Challenge and look forward to exploring this environmental study with my students.
We will record our experiences on the new cameras. Thank you so much for encouraging our students to be aware of their impact on the environment and how they can actively help to make it better!
