Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My art students are in kindergarten through grade five. The school is of the highest need. One hundred percent of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. Some are learning English and some are transient. Though the school is high in need, it is also highly caring. Here, teachers, support staff and administration work hard to create a positive learning environment. Parent participation is growing and student work, including in art, is proudly shown in the halls and in community events nights such as our recent Art and Literacy Night. District wide, our students also participate in wide events such as Hartford Performs and the Hartford Youth Art Renaissance, where three students' art work is selected for display at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The visual arts are a crucial part of our students' learning and connect to other disciplines.
We have an abundance of styrofoam from days when hot breakfast was served, and these foam trays are a great printmaking material.
Reusing an available material teaches my students a way to recycle. Creating art editions teaches them to look at their work, learn from mistakes and find strengths in their work.
My Project
As students have their other materials, this ink will complement the supplies and materials we already have. Making a drawing is fun but having a new process keeps drawing fresh. Plus, who doesn't love rolling out ink? In previous assignments, printmaking was for some students the one assignment which inspired them the most.
Creating great artworks with available materials will also inspire my students to create art from what they have outside the art class, or at least try to recycle more.
I want my students to know no material disappears completely, and reuse is one way to conserve their world. Even art making can be a way to preserve our world!
