My Students
My students are really special to me for many reasons. I have a wonderful group of students who come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. Being engaged in their own learning is crucial for ensuring their success. Many of my students are unable to bring in their own school supplies. I know that they learn best through active and meaningful experiences that they can connect across the content areas and to their own experiences.
I know my students' learning style and that learning by doing is essential for them because it is so highly motivating.
Unfortunately, most of the enriching experiences my students encounter are within the school walls because my students live in high poverty situations. An organized learning environment is essential in order for my students to be able to create freely! My students deserve to learn in the best way possible and that is providing the most welcoming atmosphere is extremely important. I believe that providing them with the materials they need aides in their success.
My Project
I am the Extended Day Enrichment Program Director at our Title I school. During our Extended Day Program, students complete an "academic hour" in which they receive homework help and academic enrichment, eat a free dinner, and play for an hour during recreation time. Each component is essential to the success of our program. Our students especially enjoy the recreation time that they have after dinner.
Research shows that play is essential to healthy brain function.
After our students have been at school all day and are with us for a few extra hours, it is vital that they are allowed to express themselves through exercise and play. The equipment supply that we have is extremely limited for our Extended Day Enrichment Program. As Director, I am sure that our recreation time would be more fun for students if we had more sports equipment for them to choose from and share.
Through donations in this project, students would receive enough equipment so that different age groups may choose what they would like to play with. We wouldn't have to switch off which group get to play with specific equipment each day. All students would be presented with equal exercise and recreational opportunities that are key to healthy habits after an extended day of school.
