This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school redefines 'college and career for all' by empowering students to build lives of independence, connection and happiness.
Every day our students explore their interests through paid internships and externships, learning how to navigate and participate in their community, and build independent living skills, all within programming focused on empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build lives of independence, connection, and happiness.
They are creative, curious, and ambitious people, pursuing careers as diverse as car washes, food service, and computer coding. They are learning to live more independently and advocate for themselves. They constantly explore the world around them through school and community resources.
My Project
We are requesting a Duet Wheelchair Bicycle Tandem. Everyone benefits both physically and mentally from physical recreation, however some of our students to not have the same access to running or biking that others do.
The tandem wheelchair bike would bring access and joy to our students, who have never had the experience of getting on a bicycle before!
Our students engage in extracurriculars daily, which can offer limited options sometimes for students in wheel chairs. This bicycle could be used daily to increase their extracurricular opportunities and bring incredible amounts of joy to the students who will be able to access biking as well as their peers and teachers.
‘Community access’ is one foundation of our curriculum, and I cannot imagine anything that speaks more to community access than this for our students in wheelchairs.
