Recording Reading, Experiencing Exellence

My students need a digital voice recorder to record their reading in a digital reading portfolio.

It is whirlwind of reading in my classroom. As a special education teacher, my focus, and the focus of my students, is to close the gap in reading. We work relentlessly on reading strategies that focus on the five pillars of reading: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Fluency.

My students struggle with reading, but often there are not enough resources that can be allocated to them. I want to make reading a good experience for them and give them the confidence to become successful in their classrooms and with reading. In particular, there is often no money allocated towards assistive technologies in reading. My students enjoy reading and hearing themselves read through other low technology options that I have purchased myself. I can only imagine the impact that a digital voice recorder would have on the students as they develop in reading.

My students need a digital voice recorder. My students will use the digital voice recorder to record themselves read as they develop as readers. This opportunity will allow the students to develop metacognition and evaluate their expression, rate, accuracy, and overall reading ability. Furthermore, the students will be able to compare their reading growth from recordings early in the year and later in the year so they can be self-determined and motivated as well as hear their development. The digital voice recorder will also be used as students become advocates for their own individualized education plan. It is my dream to have students feel empowered to participate in their IEPs and share their thoughts and ideas with their families and the professionals I work with. The digital voice recorder will allow students the opportunity to share their thoughts in a PowerPoint that they create.

My students need a boost from me to ensure they meet the standards prescribed to them by our government and school district as well as maximize their abilities in reading. I try my best to ensure they have the very best in my classroom, but I can't do it without the support and generosity of individuals that are willing to provide needed resources that will aid in their development in reading as well as their abilities to self reflect and grow.
