My Students

My students love to sing, move and play instruments. Because of the variety of activities in my room, no day is typical, but each day is a new opportunity to create, explore, dance, and be playful. Many of my students find their creative passion in my room through songs, instruments, and dances that we learn!

We have a diverse population of students at my school, with new students arriving at our school from all over the world.

For many of my students, not only are they learning English for the first time but also getting classroom music and instruments for the first time! I strive to make their classroom music experience positive, joyful, and creative with good quality instruments that are not used, warped or broken; I feel they will take more pride in their music-making!

My Project

In my district, all of the elementary schools teach a unit of recorders to fourth and fifth graders but we currently don’t have enough recorders at our school. Students truly enjoy the experience and the challenge of learning this new instrument. The curriculum is designed to motivate students to the next level of skill after accomplishing a melody, so students are working at their own pace.

Learning the recorder makes a significant impact on a child’s whole musical self.

Playing recorders together offer students opportunities for ensemble experiences, giving students the confidence to learn other instruments. Students can make successful progress in a few short weeks and are motivated, excited and focused on learning this new instrument. Using recorders is very much a musical skill as well as develops hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

At the end of 4th grade, students have the opportunity to choose a band or string instrument and this is the ideal stepping stone to strengthen our instrumental program.

This donation would allow students to keep their own instrument, putting more music into our community.
