My Project

I've worked primarily in a diverse student population for the entirety of my career in education, and throughout that time one of the biggest struggles I've faced teaching students to love reading is the lack of novels that reflect lives that are familiar to my students. This is not to say that diverse literature for teens does not exist-it MOST CERTAINLY EXISTS! I just haven't found the funding to get much of this amazing literature into the hands of my students.

My primary goal is to get two class sets of the novel Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jaqueline Woodson, into my classroom and into the hands of my students as soon as possible, so that we can dig into the story, have deep collaborative discussions, and find a new favorite book!

The other materials I've requested in this grant are to support our continued learning and synthesizing of what we read, by using focused-notetaking and further reciprocal teaching activities.

These materials will be used immediately and enjoyed by future classes of Sixth Graders as well. We appreciate, greatly, your consideration and any donation.
