Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are awesome English language learners! The fact that they are learning English is only part of what makes them so awesome, though. Do you remember what it was like or how you felt between the ages of 13 to 16? Maybe you're thinking you felt awkward, emotional and definitely confused by all that was happening to you internally and externally. Imagine being at that stage in your life and having to move to another country while going through all of those developmental changes. Did you just cringe a little thinking about how NOT fun that would be? Well, this is the life of my students.
Despite all that is occurring for them right now, the way they show up for life impresses me every day.
I am so proud to say that in the graduating class of 2019, 7 of the top 10 students were current or former ESL students. Although I have a great dynamic with my students, I take little credit for their success. Their work ethic comes from the example their families have given by working hard to get and keep them here. They deserve access to the resources that will give them tools for life.
My Project
The differences in English language proficiency in any given ESL class are vast. Each year our school has a constant influx of students from other countries who need an introduction to the procedures and expectations of the class. This takes time. Additionally, ESL teachers not only have to differentiate for language proficiency levels but the cognitive ability as well. In a class of more than 20 students, meeting everyone's needs is challenging.
Students need skill sharpening resources that can be used independently for small group instruction that meets everyone's needs to take place.
The resources that I have chosen will allow students to work on mastering the 4 language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. While small groups of students take turns using these activities, I will be able to work closely with other small groups to tackle more challenging reading and writing strategies. By working with them in this way we can maximize growth. This is our recipe for success.
