I need funding for professional development that will enable me to inspire my students to become the best version of themselves in and out of the classroom.
My eighth grade English Language Arts classroom is filled with diverse, diligent and demanding students. The majority of them are considered "underprivileged" and "at risk." However, I see them as unique, capable and in need of adult guidance and support. I try to be that person in their lives that is stable, consistent and encouraging. Meeting their emotional and academic needs is my top priority.
Every day is an opportunity to influence each student's life in a positive and supportive manner.
So many students are lacking an adult role model that provides this much needed guidance. Many come to school without the basic care and attention they deserve. This makes learning difficult and sometimes impossible. I want all my students to have a fair and equitable chance to achieve success in school and acquire the skills that will ensure a productive and meaningful future.
My Project
Teaching our young people in today's society is not an easy task. I have persevered through many changes in curriculum and state standards. Not to mention the era of high stakes testing that affects both teachers and students with stress and anxiety. Today, more than ever, teachers are exiting the profession due to increasing demands and relentless pressure from many sources.
In order to deal with the current climate in education, teachers must learn to manage the daily tensions associated with working in adverse conditions.
Teachers must acquire coping skills and emotional awareness both for themselves and those they teach. After spending three decades in the classroom, I have discovered that the best teachers are those that have found a variety of methods to manage stress and combat burnout.
Everyone benefits when teachers are emotionally healthy. However, because of limited budgets, professional development is often the first to go, leaving teachers with no opportunity to obtain new skills. Attending this workshop will revive and renew my spirit and give me the tools I need to be productive and resilient in education today.
