My students need more foam balls and jump ropes to get active during recess. More students daily are engaging in recess and we need supplies to cover this demand.
The biggest challenge in any physical education or recess setting is getting kids active and moving. It is even more challenging to getting the students to actually pick an activity they like and stick with it.
My school is in an urban community where ninety-eight percent receive free/reduced lunch.
My students have started to understand what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle. They are starting to make better choices when it comes to the types of foods they eat and they are starting to like exercising because of how it makes them feel.
My Project
My students will use the foam balls and jump ropes that I am requesting during their recess time. My school is in a district that requires daily recess for all students. With this increase, recess is able to help my students get active by allowing them to choose the activity they want to play during recess. I have witnessed my students having to share jump ropes and foam balls for the numerous games that they play during recess. Having these extra jump ropes and balls will allow my students to stay engaged in physical activity with no lag time due to having to share the resources. They can have jump rope contests to see who can jump for the longest amount of time, for the duration of recess. They can play bridge ball with multiple groups with more foam balls as well as countless other games.
These donations will make an instant impact in my classrooms because the students have to share the limited resources that we do have.
It keeps more students engaged in physical activity for a longer duration which is key when we talk about initiatives such as "Let's Move" which require children to participate in 60 minutes of activity a day. It will also help students get a better understanding of the things that they like to play and will foster a lifelong love of being active.
