Recess Irma Recovery

My students need PE and recess equipment in order to release built up energy from a rocky start to our school year.

My Students

I teach at an elementary school in a rural community of North Florida. Being in a rural community, kids do not get to play with one another after school as much as kids within a city. School is their only outlet for interaction with their peers, as most people are spread too far for kids to walk to one another.

We live in rural county in Florida with a 19.6% poverty level.

The county seat of Lake Butler holds our only elementary school, where we currently have about 1,200 students.

My Project

Hurricane Irma swept through Florida just as we were starting our school year. It has completely changed the organization and flow to the year.

Irma produced strong winds and flooding in our area that trapped students inside and interrupted our school schedule for over a week.

This produced student energy like never seen before! We hope that 2018 will bring back normalcy to our community and students.

Through this project, we hope to have our students more active in organized physical activity with tumblin mats, dodgeballs, footballs, and a parachute. We hope that this, in turn, will help students be able focus on learning to achieve academic excellence.
