My Students

Tanzania, Syria, Somalia, Honduras, Thailand, Uganda, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. This is just a snapshot of the many cultures represented in my classroom. My classes are comprised of students from the United States, as well as recent immigrants and refugees. For many of my students, school was privilege and not a right. Some students have spent their entire lives in refugee camps and have vivid memories of the sparse provisions. Far too many of them know about the realities of war.

My Project

Not all students love to read, but everyone appreciates a good story! As an English department we have made it a priority that every student will have connected reading time everyday in the classroom. The goal is that even the most reluctant reader or beginning English learner can read and enjoy a text at their Lexile level.

Unfortunately, funds for classroom libraries dried up long ago.

I often search my county library book store for recent titles, and I'm known for raiding my own children's bookshelf at home so that my students have access to recent texts.

Reading relevant and engaging literature is vital to my students' well-being. Reading books gives students the ability to be a part of a larger conversation. For those students whose English is limited, I don't want them to be left out of this conversation. Offering them a wide-range of choices from graphic novels to classic literature ensures that everyone can appreciate the written word.
