Rebuilding Our Library with Diversity, Identity & Heart

Help me give my students books with diverse characters, diverse identities, and social-emotional themes to replace our worn-out library and create a space where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered.

My Project

My students are vibrant, resilient, and full of potential. They come from a small, under-resourced community where opportunities are limited but their imaginations, voices, and dreams are limitless. What makes them truly special is their ability to show up every day with joy, despite the challenges they face. Many of them are Black and brown children who rarely see themselves in the stories we currently have on our shelves.

The goal of this project is to rebuild our worn, outdated classroom library with powerful, engaging books that reflect the students I serve.

I’ve selected titles that feature diverse characters, explore identity, and support social-emotional learning because representation matters. These books will help my students feel seen, valued, and empowered. They’ll encourage deeper conversations about self-worth, empathy, and acceptance all while building reading fluency and comprehension.

Books with characters that look like them, face challenges they can relate to, and model positive growth will support their emotional development as much as their academic growth. Instead of struggling to find something meaningful to read, my students will have access to stories that light up their hearts and minds.

With your help, this library will become more than a shelf of books, it will be a mirror, a window, and a launching pad for confidence, connection, and lifelong learning.
