My Project
In our Samoan Language and Special Education programs at our high school, we believe learning goes beyond the classroom. After monthly hands-on experiences (a‘oa‘oga lima) at Papahana Kuaola, our students are now applying what they’ve learned by creating and maintaining our own lo‘i (taro patch) and school garden on campus.
This project is more than planting crops—it’s about planting roots.
Our students are reconnecting with the land (fanua), their culture (aganu‘u), and their sense of identity (fa‘asinomaga). By working together in the lo‘i, they are embracing the Samoan values of galuega (hard work), galulue fa‘atasi (working together), and tausi le vā (nurturing relationships).
Through weeding, tilling, planting, harvesting, and storytelling, students are learning not just how to grow food, but how to grow as people. This hands-on approach is inclusive and empowering, giving all students—regardless of ability—a role, a purpose, and a voice in preserving our culture.
