Rebuilding Language Intervention

My Project

I have the pleasure of serving as a speech-language pathologist at a public elementary school under Title I, meaning most of our students are living at or below the poverty line. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and we offer several community health clinics throughout the year. In a school like this, we teachers often make do with what we have to try and compensate for what students may not be getting at home or in the community, including high quality books and learning tools. In the special education department, funds are extra thin, but our passion for serving our students with unique needs is bar none.

My classroom serves communication and speech therapy intervention for the entire elementary school which includes three preschool classrooms.

The materials that have been passed down and housed here are so out of date most students don’t recognize them. Musty picture cards of old televisions are often mistaken as “microwaves”. To work on speech sounds I have picture cards that are several decades old, faded, with nearly invisible images. Not to mention the lack of diversity in representing my students' ethnicities in the images. So many of my toys and manipulatives have had to be thrown away due to poor quality. I desperately need funds to purchase the 8 items requested from Lakeshore Learning.

These are durable, high-quality materials that can be continuously used for generations to come. They are easily cleaned which helps me have a cleaner, safer classroom. These materials are also brightly colored, include images of up-to-date toys like basketballs, footballs, and healthy foods like eggs and watermelon. Having more relatable, vibrant manipulatives helps my students with special needs connect what they are seeing and touching to what they are hearing and saying.
