Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although my students are high school age, they still love hands-on, investigative learning.
These students learn best when they are able to create and learn by doing rather than listening and taking notes.
My students are Strong
Hurricane Harvey dealt my small town a devastating blow. Many of my students lost their homes, clothing, or essential supplies to begin the school year. Despite their own personal loss, it was absolutely amazing to see these kids come together for their town. Many could be seen unloading supplies, working on houses, moving trees, and helping others. Our kids shined in the face of adversity and never gave up.
My students are Writers
Whether it is writing poetry or an essay project, these kids love to learn through writing. From the moment they walk into my classroom, we write. They may not enjoy it in the beginning, but by the time they leave, my goal is that they know that they are writers and what they have to say is important. After Harvey, many of my students expressed their needs and feelings through writing. Writing helped them heal and allowed me to assess their needs.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey washed away half of my classroom library and has depleted my personal funds for my classroom. I was able to salvage some of my bookshelves and purchase a couple more, but sadly, they are not full and inviting. I want to incorporate literature circles in my classroom to allow my students more variety and control over their learning. Restoring some of the more popular books from my library will allow my students more variety to enhance their learning. We do not currently have a library on campus. The English teacher's classroom libraries have become the campus libraries for all students. I have multiple students a week coming into my classroom to "check out" books. Additionally, I would like my students to create interactive notebooks to enhance their learning. Through creativity and organization, my students should be able to excel in the classroom. In my cart, you will find a document camera to display notebooks for following along, markers, coloured paper, and glue to replenish classroom supply and help make our notebooks colourful and fun. Also, you will find 5 copies of various books. These books were selected with the students in mind. I want them to have variety when choosing books to read for their literature circles. Finally, you will find items I have chosen to make my classroom more inviting such as an Echo Dot (Alexa can quiz the kids and give me a timer), borders, and pens for grading.
