Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are second language learners and are in the dual language program. Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students qualify for the free or reduced-priced lunch program.
Many of my students have been displaced after Hurricane Harvey and are still living with family members or friends months later and are struggling financially and emotionally.
I teach three dual language Pre-K classes made up of 60 students with 50% of the time taught in English and 50% of the time in Spanish. My students have been affected by Hurricane Harvey with family businesses being closed, homes going through rebuilding and families being displaced. My students are ready to move on and learn and with donations made to our classroom they will be able to accomplish this.
My Project
My students begin the year not knowing what to do with even a small puzzle with outlines of simple shapes. By Halloween, they are intrigued by more difficult puzzles. By Christmas, they can't get enough of the challenge of putting the puzzles together both by themselves and in cooperative learning groups.
My 4 year old pre-k students are obsessed with puzzles!
Puzzles are an excellent and fun method of learning physical skills when they hold the pieces and turn them until they fit. They learn cognitive skills as they solve the problems of a puzzle. They also learn emotional skills as they learn patience and are rewarded when they complete the puzzle.
These three basic skills are the building blocks for a well rounded person and my students will enjoy acquiring these skills with the puzzles in this project request. The puzzles are all about units we learn throughout the year like sea life, transportation, animals, food, and the rain forest so the puzzles will act as reinforcement to the units.
