These books are best practice read-alouds from Vera Ahiyya's acclaimed 2022 book Rebellious Read Alouds. In Ahiyya's own words "So, when we we talk about Rebellious Read Alouds, what are we rebelling against exactly?
We are rebelling against what we have been told are the norms: The norm that says early elementary students are too young to have important conversations."
I have used the interlibrary loan system to read some of these books to my students during library time. These read-alouds have helped create a positive shift in our culture as students learn to recognize and celebrate their differences. Many scholars are frustrated that they are unable to check out the book after the read aloud is over. Students are also unable to read these books with a friend during Independent Daily Reading or at home with their families.
