Rebellion and Immigration: Angel Island Wasn't Heavenly

My students need resources to learn about the Boxer Rebellion and Chinese immigration through Angel Island.

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature and art.

My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.

As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.

My Project

My students will continue their study of Imperial China, by learning about The Boxer Rebellion and the revolution that led to the founding of the Republic of China (including propaganda "wars"). I currently have 12 copies of Boxers & Saints, but I'm trying to attain a class set, so that students won't need to share. Following this, students will study Chinese immigration through Angel Island (SF Bay). This local site has a fascinating and important history -- almost a million immigrants from China, Japan and Korea disembarked on Angel Island, but their situation was much different than that of European immigrants entering through Ellis Island in New York. Most were detained for weeks, months and sometimes years, because of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

The history of Chinese immigrants on Angel Island is a sorrowful part of California's history, and should not be forgotten.

My students will study this history before traveling there toward the end of 7th grade.
