Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are always excited when they enter the classroom, especially on lab days. They enjoy hands-on activities, working in small groups and being able to explore with their peers. My goal is to provide my students with an engaging, fun and safe learning environment. My school is located in a low social economic neighborhood where 95% of the students are on free or reduced price lunch. Most of my students are faced with many challenges in the classroom and at home.
My Project
I want to create a space for all of our students to go outside for a hands on learning experience. Our school has a space that used to be a garden, but it has been over grown with weeds and needs some love. It has been my dream for sometime to recreate this space for all students Pre-K through Fifth to have an outside place to learn and grow.
Students would be able to participate in the care of the garden year around with the green house including planting fruits and vegetables that they would be able to take home.
Each grade level would have their own raised garden bed to use.
My students need more than just a garden though, they need a place to learn outside. Stations with thermometers, barometers, and rain gauges would be set up for everyone to use when teaching about weather or any other time. I would also love a spot deemed a butterfly garden so our students can observe the life cycle in nature vs with technology. A special stream table that would have multiple purposes would be an exciting addition. The stream table could be used for water play in our more primary grades, it would become a hands on model for weather, erosion, deposition for my older students to observe and create. This would also be use to help water the garden to show students reuse of water. Picnic tables with umbrellas would be placed in our garden to have class outdoors or maybe even a special class lunch. The possibilities are endless.
