Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten kids come into the classroom in August as blank slates and leave in May as readers! It is the most amazing transition to watch and be a part of. I teach Kindergarten for this reason alone - I believe that it the grade that you truly see the most growth. The biggest challenge I face, as most teachers is the lack of resources available.
My students are English Language Learners and most have typically never been in a school setting before.
Being in a Title I school, all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day, and some receive snack packs that they take home over the weekend. The students work hard and they love their school. We are a K-6 school, and at the end of every year we have a 'clap out' where we stand in the breezeways and clap for all those 6th graders that will be leaving our school and attending a middle school the next year. We always have those students who were in 6th grade come back and say how much they miss our school. The sense of community is really strong here - which makes us a great school!
My Project
I am trying to build my class library to include fun books that will keep students engaged. At the end of each reading lesson, I read a book to them, but with continuous cuts to education - our reading program includes some outdated books. Some of the books we read to the class are classics, so I want to keep those, but supplement with some amazing books that are out now.
I am trying to expose students to some authors that they might not otherwise happen to have the opportunity to read.
