Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently teaching 6th grade math in East Oakland. My school is a small and incredibly diverse group of motivated students. However, I have found great difficulty in linking math to their real lives. We have used traditional examples of money for decimals and pizza for fractions, but I fear those examples do not allow students to see the depth of their knowledge in the real world.
Beginning with the second semester, I will be issuing mostly project-based assessments to hopefully spark a lifetime interest in math. I had no trouble finding manipulatives for area and perimeter, but I struggled with finding interesting yet simple examples of ratio, proportion, and scale.
My proposal is for one digital camera for classroom project use. We will use this camera for a specific project that will allow my students to take pictures of objects at set distances to determine height. In addition, the geometry applications are endless, as the students can find shapes all around them.
This addition to the classroom will provide my students not only with a tremendous activity, but also a visual display of their hardwork over the year. Pictures from this project will take the place of bland written tests on bulletin board.
Please help my students realize their skills!!
