George Orwell's classic dystopian novel is more timely today than ever. Big Brother is watching, and I would like my students to crack open this book on our own bright cold day in April.
My goal: Students excel in 21st-Century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
They share questions, ideas, and solutions; work together to reach a goal; look at problems in a new way; and try new approaches to get things done through innovation and invention.
My Project
We live in a technologically driven world. Students are more attached to their cell phones than ever, but are they aware that the government and private businesses as well are tracking their every move. Tracking what they buy and from whom. Sounds like something out of Orwell's novel of the future. The future is here. I believe my students will be fascinated with this dystopian novel (1984) of the future and see how much of the horrors that Orwell predicted are happening today and how we take it all for granted.
Before heading off to college and careers, my students need to be proficient in analyzing great novels of the past like Orwell's to see why we should still study the voices of the past and how history truly repeats itself.
My current class set of novels has fallen to bits from being loved by previous generations of students.
We need a new class set of novels so every student in my magnet English classes can read this striking novel. My project will reach 165 students in five classes.
