My Project
The 75 students in our freshman AVID classes are learning skills they don't typically learn in traditional high school courses. It's important for them to be able to walk with confidence into the real world, prepared with more than just academic skills. After a semester of learning how to "adult," we would like to host a Ron-Clark-inspired Amazing Shake competition to assess their growth.
Through professional interactions with adults, students will demonstrate how to give a good handshake, how to engage in conversation with confidence, and how to stay composed under pressure.
This one-hour competition involves real-world simulations set up around the room. Each student must pass through these simulations while exercising etiquette, composure, and savoir-faire. One of the simulations involves sitting at a table for a wedding reception. There will be multiple kinds of plates and silverware, glasses, soup, and bread. Students will need to not only know how to eat their food in a formal setting (considering what to do with their napkin and which utensil to use with which item) but also how to carry on a natural conversation while doing so.
