This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember asking yourself "When am I ever going to use this type of math in real life" in middle school?
My group of 90 7th graders attend a public middle school in the Bronx, NY.
Most of them live in high poverty areas but the socioeconomic differences are broken down in our classroom. My students are at such a critical point in their math development, exploring and deepening their understanding of abstract concepts in Algebra and Geometry. Most of these scholars struggle with a deep understanding of some of the concepts and the connection between math and the real-world. Using this resource with my scholars would change their lives and offer these teenagers a chance to make connections between their own mathematical understanding and the world around them.
My Project
These resources (Scholastic Math subscriptions) will play an important role in my scholars' math understanding because it will help them make connections to science, technology, engineering, social studies, economics, art and more. My scholars will also be able to see how math fits into real-world current events such as the 2012 Presidential Election. By using this resource this year, I want to engage my scholars with math features on topics they care about as well as prepare them for the real-world with everyday math applications.
This project is important to me because I remember struggling with Algebra when I was in middle school.
Middle school is such a crucial time for bridging scholars' concrete knowledge to more abstract understanding and I will use these magazines to help bring numbers and math concepts to life for my scholars and develop their conceptual mathematical understanding as well as an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics.
