Making connections is what is all about. The key to retention and comprehension is the ability to connect personally to each situation. This same philosophy holds true for math. The more connections a student can make to their real world the higher the retention and application of each concept.
I teach a wonderful group of fourth grade students who come from a rural, Title I school.
Students in this area are limited to resources outside their community. My students are eager to learn and make sense out of math. I want to shower them with real world applications to impact higher level thinking skills and retention of content.
My Project
With the use of the Math Real World situation cards and dry erase markers, students will be able to practice independently on math concepts that are directly related to situations in our everyday life. Research shows that the more connections we make to our life the more opted we are to retain, apply and grow in our knowledge of the content being studied. Students will be able to choose their own concept card to complete to ensure the highest level of connection. This is a great way to differentiate students learning. Each card is laminated, therefore reusable each day. Students will be able to record their responses on the card with the requested dry erase markers. The reusable write and wipe pockets will be used by the students in the same manner as dry erase boards and to house handouts that can be reused. The novelty of the write & wipe will engage students and foster motivation and time on task.
Please help make an impact on student learning with the implementation of the real world math concept cards, dry erase markers and write & wipe pockets.
Learning math with these resources will ensure real world application and motivation.
