Many of my students struggle with learning simply because they have not had certain experiences growing up.
I have the best students in the world.
Because of this I want to give them the best!! Majority of my students are living in poverty and many are English as a Second Language. For this reason, some of my kids find education very challenging. The students want to learn though. They learn best by experiencing fun, real life, and engaging lessons.
My Project
Imagine trying to solve a math word problem about a situation that you have never experienced or heard of before. Instead of being able to solve the math problem, my kids get stuck on the actual cultural situation of the problem. There have been countless times when my kids can't figure out a problem because they haven't experienced it. With the digital cameras, I would love to take my students on a walk around the neighborhood, where they are familiar with, and take pictures of their world. Then we will transform those photos into learning experiences. For example, we could take pictures of signs at a bakery and create story problems such as "If a dozen of donuts is $6.50, how much would it cost for 5 dozens of donuts?" We could also use images and point out all of the geometric shapes such as equilateral triangles. I believe activities like this will make it more engaging and will allow students to use their own life experiences to learn from.
I am a first year teacher and I really want to make a positive impact on my students.
I strongly believe that learning should be fun. This project will show students that math can be exciting and that it is all around us. It will also allow my students who are living in a lower social economic status and who are ESL to get pass some of the cultural barriers so that they can learn. My class and I would be very grateful to receive donations for this project.
