Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To tell you a little about my school, we primarily serve students educationally restricted by various behavioral and emotional at-risk factors as they have been marginalized by socio-economic, geographic, and familial circumstances. The vast majority of students will hail from backgrounds that are characterized as impoverished or low-income, single-parent families, predominantly Spanish speakers (English language learners) and will be first-generation college bound. These students are residents of areas permeated from trauma that often comes from with gang cultures, violence, unemployment and underemployment, obesity, a shorter lifespan, a majority of adults without a high school diploma, and high numbers of people living per household.
I am so happy to have the opportunity to teach my favorite subject
and these supplies will help to make my classroom environment stimulating and comfortable, in addition to helping them become successful mathematicians.
My Project
Growing up, I had an elementary school teacher that made math come alive! I want to do this for my students. Many people have negative feelings towards mathematics mainly because someone in their life talked about how math is no fun, or how they were never good at it. I want to change this!
I want my students to have an understanding of how mathematics works in the real world and have fun while learning about it!
I try to make my lessons as hands on, fun and engaging as I can and these supplies will help me with this! Many of my students are builders and tinkers. They love to create things, whether its using paper, blocks, legos, etc, they are very hands on. With the robots and engineering kits, I want to challenge my classes to work together to create things. The book collection will be great when I start my financial literacy lessons and also some great resources for students to read about if they are done with their classwork. Lastly, my students love playing video games and board games and what better way for them to have fun while learning than through some mathematics board games. These will help me to reinforce my lessons in a fun and engaging way!
