Real World Learner--Not Fake News

My students need periodicals such as National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, The Economist and The New Yorker, to keep them current with the events that are relevant today and in the future, so they can become informed citizens.

My Students

I teach English to juniors and seniors, and each year, I serve 130 - 165 students from diverse backgrounds and learning abilities with real world problems and issues. My students also have numerous strengths and positive attributes that just need to be tapped-into, in order for them to unlock their full potential. A little effort and support will go a long way with my students, and as an educator, it is not just my job to teach them how to punctuate a sentence properly, or to understand what Shakespeare was really trying to say, but to prepare them for their futures, no matter how diverse they may be.

My Project

Increasing knowledge and self-esteem of my students is my biggest goal. In my classroom, I have adopted a philosophy of creating lifelong readers, therefore, I am continually trying to update my classroom's reading material. Especially in today's world where fake news is on the rise, students need to read authentic text, but also read text which is longer than a ​few sentences.

Students will use these magazines to expand their reading ability, to build a reading community within the classroom, and to inspire each other to become a lifelong learner and readers.

My kids share the articles, make podcasts, write reviews, and present article talks and create trailers to show their understanding of the author's argument.
