My Students
We teach in a large school district within Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch.
Our school is VERY diverse with students from all different ethnicities and cultures! Our ELL students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Chin, Burmese, Zo, Karen, Kareeni, Thai, Maay Maay, and Arabic. Our ELL students all come in at all different academic and language levels and work hard toward becoming fluent in the English language!
My Project
We teach ELL, English Language Learners, in a high needs elementary school, grades K-5 We have students from Mexico, Laos, Burma, Yemen, Malaysia, Thailand, and Sudan, and because they have come from families with limited resources, many never have had the opportunity to participate in real-world experiences as other children have done. For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children. However, most of our students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We would love to take our 5th grade ELL students to the Zoo to have an opportunity to do something they might otherwise not be able to experience.
We are trying to help them to financially be able to afford admission into the zoo, feed a giraffe, experience 2-3 of the rides, and to practice speaking in English while ordering/paying for a small food item (ice cream).
This field trip will help students realize their dreams of exploring and making personal connections to the world around them. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. Thank you for considering our ELL students. This would be an amazing adventure!
