I teach a group of curious first graders in the Chinatown Area each year. About 78% of the students qualify for free/reduce lunch and 72% of the students are in the English as a Second Language Program. Teaching and working in an inner city school is a challenge. Many of the students have never had any hands on experiences in any kind of factory. As part of our reading/language and science curriculum, my first graders will be learning about animal habitats which includes land, ocean,and sky animals. We will read books, watch animal videos,and compare and contrast the animals habitats. To end the unit it would be a great experience for the students to visit the America's Oldest Real Working Teddy Bear Factory which is located in San Francisco at the Cannery. Students will be able to experience the process/steps in creating a stuffed bear and learning the history of the teddy bear. They will be able to bring home the teddy bear which they have created. This definitely will be an experience they will not forget. With your generous donation,each student will be able to bring a teddy bear of their own home. They will be able to go through the process of a teddy bear factory.Can you imagine the joy and smile each student will have when their teddy bear is completed? Thank you for your consideration.
