My Project

Our school is a small school with less than 400 students. However, there are 18 different languages spoken among our students and their families. Many of our students are bilingual, learning English as a second language. Some students start school not knowing any English.

Learning to read is a huge part of first grade, and vocabulary knowledge is a pivotal part of becoming successful readers.

When our students spend most of their awake time in the classroom every day, it is our greatest responsibility to create a word-rich classroom environment where students' opportunities to learn new words can be maximized. I learned English and a second language, and I still look up words all the time, and often I look up images of a word to help me understand the meaning.

Teachers in our building currently share 2 outdated printers that are often broken, unavailable, and out of ink. None of those printers are equipped to make color copies. I would like to be able to print picture in colors at school to label my classroom for my ELL students to be able to match words with real pictures as they see in real life. When first graders begin to read, that excitement is almost unreal. They want to read every word they see. It may be just a printer, but it can help our students learn new words in much efficient ways.
