My Students

Our school is a public exam school in a large urban district. We are a Title I school with a diverse student population. We stand apart from other schools both within and outside of the city because our students must take four years of Latin beginning in seventh grade until tenth grade. For almost all of my students, it is their first exposure to the Latin language or any foreign language ever. This year, they will learn grammatical structures of English and Latin grammar, along with classical mythology, history, and culture.

My Project

Latin may be ancient but our resources shouldn't. My kids deserve real whiteboards that can erase. I currently have a blackboard that had been converted 5+ years ago into a whiteboard via Idea paint. The finish is starting to wear off. This makes it difficult to erase without leaving behind a residue. I love to have kids go to the board and share answers, but I've been doing it less and less because of the mess that it leaves behind.

Kids also love to write on the board. The new whiteboard has a dual purpose. By having access to a dry erase board that works, I can have more students up at the board writing and allowing them to share their work and show off their skills. This is a perfect way to engage them and keep their interest in a language that is considered "dead". In addition, I can use the whiteboard to project images onto it. I will be able to annotate sentences right on the board and students will be able to see crisper images.
