Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the children of migrant workers. Better than 90% of our students are Spanish speaking and speak English as a second language. The skills these students learn in my shop classes are skills they will utilize throughout their lifetimes.
With more than 85% of our students classified as low income, the majority of my students do not really know of the vast world and opportunities outside of their hometown.
With the chance to travel to different colleges and compete using different "hands-on" skills, my students receive an opportunity to discover a world outside of our hometown.
My Project
My classes are "hands-on" classes where students have the opportunity to learn valuable real world skills that will better prepare them for the job market. However, with the hands-on training comes the need for new and up-to-date tools that are used in the actual work place.
Many schools are unable to purchase tools that are actually used in the workplace because they are expensive.
I need to be able to put tools into the hands of my students that they will use when they leave my classroom and move on to the job market.
With the chance to travel to different colleges and compete at different "hands-on" skills, my students receive an opportunity to discover a world outside of our hometown.
I am requesting a cordless band saw which is commonly found on many job sites. My students will be very happy to be able to use real tools to prepare them for real world jobs.
