This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need more exercise. And no, Pokemon Go is not the answer.

Nearly all of my student come from very a low socioeconomic area, where most families do not have the extra money to put their children in organized sports.

Most of my students have a very limited knowledge of sports, other than the common soccer and football that they see on TV. I would love to introduce them to some new sports such as volleyball, baseball, croquet and badminton. We could turn it into an extension activity by researching the rules of the games, where the game was invented and have the students perhaps create their own NEW games using the equipment or by making changes to the current rules of the game.

My Project

Between the Common Core, advancements in technology, and lack of resources it seems that playing organized sports has become a thing of the past for this new generation of kids. Most of the students in my class/school when given the choice between "extra recess" (playing outside) and "free time" (in class, on computers) 9 out of 10 students will want to spend time sitting playing computer games. Coming from a childhood of playing sports and hide-n-go-seek in the neighborhood, this lack of interest in physical activity breaks my heart. I want to try to get my students excited about exercising and playing sports. My idea of doing this would include introducing them to NEW sports and games they haven't played before. At our school, the classroom teacher is expected to teach PE, but very limited resources are given to us to work with.

Because my class only has access to basic PE equipment (such as playground balls and hula hoops) most of my students view PE as simply an extension of recess.

I want to change this viewpoint my students have. I want them to know sports other than soccer exist in the real world. I want to introduce to them croquet, badminton, volleyball and baseball!
