Real News for Real Kids
My students need access to real-world reading materials that are engaging in order to build their background knowledge and vocabulary.
In my county, 6th graders are still in elementary school. We are a Title I school with 75% on free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have home lives that some of us could never imagine, yet they make it to school every day.
More importantly, by the time they get to 6th grade they become less motivated to learn and more motivated to socialize.
This requires me to become more creative in the ways I can hook them into learning.
Because my students live in a small town, many of them are unfamiliar with anything that happens outside of their home or school. Many of my students are below grade level and find chapter books intimidating. And let's face it, the news on television is depressing and not of interest to preteens. Time for Kids is the perfect tool to engage them in reading something other than social media while also increasing their self-confidence.
Time for Kids will allow my students access to real-life news that is imperative in building background knowledge and vocabulary to help them become productive members of society.
