My Project

At Sullivan Elementary, we are committed to implementing engaging, real-world math activities that allow our students to apply their knowledge in practical, meaningful ways. By securing TeachersPayTeachers gift cards, each grade level team will have access to purchase high-quality, standards-aligned project-based learning (PBL) resources. These PBL math tasks will immerse students in authentic scenarios that require them to use their content understanding along with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop solutions. Integrating these hands-on, relatable math experiences into our curriculum is essential for achieving our goals. Not only will it boost student motivation and deeper conceptual learning, but it directly supports our state's new checkpoint model.

The primary goals for this project are to transform math instruction at Sullivan Elementary to be more engaging, relevant, and focused on building critical mathematical practices.

By integrating authentic, hands-on learning experiences, we aim to increase student motivation and help them see the real-world applications of the math concepts they are learning. Through project-based learning activities that mirror realistic scenarios, students will have opportunities to develop valuable 21st century skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and quantitative literacy. Additionally, we want to better align our math curriculum and assessments with our state's new checkpoint model emphasizing the ability to use math proficiently.

Elementary teachers have the powerful opportunity to shape how students view math from a young age. By making math engaging, relevant, and approachable, teachers can spark curiosity and enthusiasm that inspires lifelong confidence with numerical reasoning. Additionally, the elementary years are when core math concepts like numbers, operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, and data are first introduced. How these building blocks are taught is pivotal for developing solid conceptual understanding before advancing to more abstract applications.
