I love my job! I am so lucky to work with the students in our district. I work in a inner city school district as an occupational therapist with students with disabilities. Every day our students come to school ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. They amaze and inspire me everyday!
Each of my students have individual amazing strengths that allow them to overcome barriers and not only participate but grow, learn, and excel at school.
We work hard to provide our students with the tools to be successful at school to the best of their abilities. All students can learn, we just need to give them the right tools and opportunities!
Many of our students, want to learn but have significant difficulties in the area self-regulation. This includes students with Autism, ADHD, developmental delays, lead exposure and emotional impairment. Our students can have other challenges including homelessness, poverty, and living in a high crime area.
However, every day our students inspire us with their grit and determination. Our school is a safe place for our students with wonderful educators who make our students part of a school family.
My Project
I work with children in special needs classroom. We have a great need to teach money and financial concepts from our 3-5 year old Early Childhood through 6th grade classrooms.
Most of our students learn best with visual examples that they can manipulate.
These tools would allow us to teach financial literacy concepts through the use of play, games, and "real life" like experiences. When incorporated with current curriculum, these tools would be used to reinforce concepts in groups and individual activities. These are very important concepts for our students and because some can't learn through traditional methods, these tools give us additional opportunities to teach these concepts to our students.
