Real Life Chemistry in Art

Help me give my students tools for making models in chemistry. The STEELS standards asks teachers to provide students with hands on experiences and focus on explanations and making models.

My Project

I love that my students are willing to try new things to explore how chemistry is part of our everyday lives. I work with multiple community partners to illustrate where we can observe chemistry in real-life situations and use it to explain what we see. Students are more engaged when completing hands-on activities and are more likely to remember the experience and explain it when it is meaningful to them.

The real goal is for students to create models for scientific phenomena that help them think outside of the box.

I want them to create Egyptian paste as an example of making a mixture that will then turn into a new substance that can't be broken down. The bonus of making Egyptian paste is that it allows them to create artwork that they can take with them.

The molecular modeling kits will be used to make the traditional models of molecules when we are looking at covalent bonding. I have found that providing students with the models and asking them to figure out what the models will look like is much more engaging than just drawing dot structures on paper. Unfortunately, I do not currently have modeling kits that show how unshared pairs of electrons impact the shapes of the molecules.

The silicone molds are specifically for making Egyptian paste which ties in the differences in the states of matter at the particle level, exemplifies and difference between a chemical and a physical change, and is also used to show examples of how elements have their own properties, and those properties changes when they bond to make compounds. We come back to the example of the Egyptian paste and discuss how the kiln provides the activation energy needed for the glazes to oxidize and create new substances with new properties.
