My Students

Our students "ZOOM" into our distance learning classrooms full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I ask them, "Who is excited to learn today?" They call back, "We are!"

As second graders, this is the first year they are ready to read chapter books and participate in class book circles.

It is also the first time they have to log into a laptop and do it virtually. As we only have a short period of time online together, they need the ability to have the chapter books at home.

Our students need their own copies of chapter books to borrow from us during distance learning so they may still share the enriching experience of a book club, and the joy of reading an expository science chapter book independently!

My school is in a middle-class area, which makes it tough to garner extras for the class; we are not a Title I or SIG school, yet we are also not wealthy enough for parents to be able to donate costly extras. We are a "Tweener School"!

My Project

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Students will be able to read actual books at home, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to that will allow them to read the expository text at their grade level and that are connected to their science curriculum.

They will also be able to discuss them in a class book club and share ideas and thoughts with their classmates to promote speaking and listening skills. This is a unique time in education and even though virtually, it would permit some socialization time as well.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
