My name is Cynthia Rosado. I teach first grade in a Title One school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. My students are all English Language Learners. They learn how the language is structured and accumulate vocabulary as they learn to read and write. The children are incredible. They are so willing to try to comprehend one another. Pictures play a key role in their development as pictures help to fill in the gaps in their ideas and questions. For that reason I try to collect nonfiction books that are rich with illustrations.
My students recently discovered a pumpkin book by Gail Gibbons. The book had so many features about the growth of a pumpkin--how to carve a pumpkin, different types of pumpkins, etc.--that the children searched the library for other books by that author. To their delight we found another on chickens. I would love to get eleven more books by Gail Gibbons. As we begin reading nonfiction how-to and all-about books, I feel these books would provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge in a format ideal for my English Language Learners as well as provide them with a mentor for them as authors. These books from Amazon.com teach real information but with an incredible amount of visual supports. I am thrilled that my students have chosen a writing mentor of their own. I believe these books will not only teach them content but also teach them how to use text features. These books would provide them with a way to gather and share their ideas as they become stronger language learners.
