This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in one of the highest poverty school districts in the state, my students are faced with daily challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I am aiming for school to be a safe place where my students can learn, express themselves and their creativity.
My students come from diverse linguistic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
My classroom is a fully inclusive classroom filled with the most enthusiastic and creative learners. This means there are both general and special education students learning together and from one another. Day in and day out, I'm amazed at how they look at the world. Their sense of wonder, curiosity and enthusiasm for learning makes me excited for what the future holds.
My Project
There is a large body of research that supports decodable readers (phonics readers) as the best way to teach kids to read. To be effective teachers we should have lots of books available for kids to read but unfortunately we don't have any decodable readers in our classroom libraries. This leaves teachers to scour the internet for decodable books, print them out, and make copies for forty students! We spend so much time (and money) finding these books, printing them, and photocopying them each week. Having our own library of high-interest decodable books would be amazing for our kids learning in person as well as at home.
