Help me give my students these award-winning books to prepare for our annual reading competition and to read as a class during our advanced reading units of study.
These books all received Georgia Children's Book Awards and are part of our annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition. My students have participated in the competition for the last three years. Every year we get better and better! I love to see how my little readers get excited about the books, working together to prepare for the competition, and challenging each other to read more and "compete willingly" (one of our school initiatives!). Through this competition and the generosity of previous donors, we have enjoyed so many books that we might otherwise have missed. My students and I especially appreciate the diversity in these novels -- they see themselves in the cultures and character traits that are represented here, not to mention the variety of genres (they love graphic novels!).
These books will benefit my class and our entire school!
First we use the books to prepare for the reading competition. This year, I have also selected three of the books to use as part of our units of study. So my entire class of 4th and 5th grade advanced learners will enjoy them as part of our mythology and mystery cross-curricular units. Then when we are finished, the books are donated to our school library so that everyone can enjoy them!
Reading more is the best way to improve reading ability and so much more. Reading benefits students in every subject area and in their social-emotional skills. And when they have access to interesting, relevant texts, my learners dive in! They are so grateful for the opportunity to read great texts independently and together.
