My Students
My students are wonderful children from a rural, and poverty background. We are a Title I school and all my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
So many of my students have very few positive family structures.
In Muskogee County, social services tell us that around 1/3 of the students are being raised by grandparents or someone other than the parents. I want to inspire them to learn and to see the surrounding world and what all it has to offer. There is no public library here. The nearest public library is over Braggs Mountain and a minimum of 15 miles away for students.
My Project
My students will explore fabulous authors such as Eric Carle and Arnold Lobel.
We will read the books then check out the books to take home and read with family members.
We want to incorporate art and so we will draw excerpts of the story or main characters. We want to include writing also and I would love to have the 1st and 2nd graders do simple journal entries of their thoughts about the book.
We have started, as of August 2021, a library in an elementary school that has never had a library. We check out using cards and pockets instead of a computerized system, which we cannot afford.
We are having fun and learning a great deal. Our goal is to get every student (K-2) reading on level.
