This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school serves a diverse population of students and families with 100% eligible for free lunch. Many come from nontraditional homes, being raised by single mothers, grandparents, and other family members. Language barriers can be challenging. In a mainly Hispanic speaking community, they all come in eager and ready to learn.
My goal is to ensure that each child is provided a safe and nurturing environment.
Each child learns differently. Learning to read can be a struggle for some children. Leveled books would help give the children the sense of independence and confidence to read books.
My Project
Kindergarten students are just beginning their lifelong journey of reading. We spend much time on learning our letters and sounds. We then focus on pushing those letters and sounds together to form words, sentences, and stories. As the children begin to read sentences on books, their eyes light up knowing they are using their knowledge from what they are learning. Having books on their reading level will ensure confidence and begin a love of reading. Our classroom has books that are above my kindergarteners level. They struggle and aren't enjoying reading as much as they could and should be. Reading should be a lifelong journey to learning.
