This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know, The more that you learn, The more places you will go." Dr. Seuss
My students are enthusiastic learners who are just learning to read and they LOVE reading big books and acting the stories out.
Every week we read new big books and revisit old ones but, our big books are easily 20-years-old and they are starting to show it! Instead of focusing on finding sight words in the stories or listening for story elements such as characters and setting, my students are distracted by the holes and rips in the pages. They have also become tired of the same routine and with these new big book activity sets, it will help spice up our shared reading time.
My Project
Big books are used daily for shared reading and allow us to give students an interactive experience in which we can model the skills of a good reader. During shared reading we teach students parts of a book, reading readiness skills, model how to read with fluency and expression, work with sight words, and also build comprehension skills. With the added activity kits with the big books, the students in my classroom will be able to use creative expression to retell the story.
Big books are an important part in literacy instruction especially in kindergarten.
They not only allow us to teach students how to become readers but, establish an enjoyment for reading which is of the utmost importance. With the funding of this project you will help put creative expression and acting into shared reading!
