This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Every year the Eliot Rosewater Awards let high school students in Indiana pick their favorite book from a short list of around 20 books that are nominated the previous school year. These books have been released within the past 3 years and feature characters and plots that are more fun to read than the typical ELA fare. Last year our school was able to get the Rosewater books for the first time in many years thanks to generous Donors Choose donors and the students who have checked out these books have enjoyed them.
The Rosewater nominees are engaging reads and we want to have these books front and center to start the 2024-2025 school year.
Our library was unstaffed for years and in the process of a major glow up. Being able to have the nominees was a success and I want to be able to do this again. Next year we plan to be circulating with ELA classes. We had a 30 minute Friday Book Club this school year where students came in to free read. Students now come to our library for their lunch time, so having these books right near where they sign in will catch more eyes and get them to circulate. I would love to have these Rosewater books ready to go for students to start checking out in August.
Numerous studies support the importance of student free reading. When students read for pleasure, they improve their vocabulary, they use their imaginations, and they improve their mental stamina. Many of our students do not have access to reading materials in their own homes, so having choices at school is a game changer for them. Thank you for your help in providing high quality reading materials to our students.
