Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a low income Title I school. Many of my students do not have the resources that they need at home such as books on their reading level. They also do not have books in another language to support and nurture their ability to learn a second language. In order to learn a new language it is necessary to immerse yourself in it. This is possible through books and learning materials.
We are a first grade dual language class.
My students are developing language proficiency in two languages by receiving instruction in English and Spanish. We provide both sets of students with ample exposure to the two languages, allowing them to progress academically in both languages and gain an appreciation of another culture.
Our school is a high needs Title I school in the Bronx. The majority of my students come from low income homes. However, that does not take away their enthusiasm for learning especially in a different language other than English. They feel very special knowing that they will be able to take advantage of opportunities that are available only in other languages.
My Project
In my dual language classroom library there are not enough books for my students to be able to choose 5 books for their independent reading bags. My students have ziplock bags that they use to carry their independent books home everyday to practice reading.
The books in my library are paper books that I have printed off the computer in order to provide extra books.
These books get torn and are not in color, therefore they do not look appealing to my students. They have read the same books over and over and they have lost interest. By providing them with emergent Spanish books both in fiction and in nonfiction it will re energize their desire for learning in Spanish.
