My Students

My first-grade students come to school eager to learn. I am so proud of how much they have accomplished this year. Several of the students did not attend Kindergarten with all that was going on with COVID. Unfortunately, many of them were not on the expected level of learning that is expected for students in first grade.

My Project

We love learning to read. My students are excited about reading and writing. I have been intensively studying the Science of Reading and have come to appreciate the difficulty of the reading and writing process for young learners.

I teach reading to 50+ first-grade students.

The spark of excitement and pride I see on students' faces as they progress in their learning is energizing.

My students use Expo markers every day as part of our phonics routine. Students orthographically map words and write dictation sentences on whiteboards. I love using this method of recording for my students. I have immediate feedback. The kids love to use the Expo markers and actually look forward to writing.

We could also use new highlighters. We do a close reading routine several times a week focusing on a specific phonics pattern or the main ideas from our weekly story. The students use highlighters to mark the reading passages.
